1. Subscribe to Natural Hair Brands
There are so many natural hair brands around that it’s challenging to keep up with them.
But you already know who your favorite brands are, why not subscribe to them?
Search for their website and get on their email list. Lots of brands offer a coupon code just for signing up for their newsletter.
Besides signing up for their email list, they will treat you like a VIP (very important person). That means you’ll be the first to get information on new products, brand ambassador opportunities, sales, special offers, tutorials on how to use products and most of all, giveaways.
2. Follow Hair Brands on Social Media
While joining newsletters is a great way to know what natural hair brands are up to, some are more active on social media.
Following hair brands on social media is the quickest and easiest way to find out what’s new.
I’m sure for some of us, we forget to check our emails regularly, and that would mean we’d miss out on fantastic product deals by the time we see those emails.
But, since some of us spend a reasonable amount of time on social media than we do in our inbox, it would nearly be impossible for us to miss brand promotions and informational content since they post on different social media platforms throughout the day.
Try to follow brands on social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook and Twitter if you don’t want to miss information about deals.
3. Use Products the Way They Were Intended to Be Used
You can buy the most expensive product on the market, but if you are not using it the right way, you will not reap any benefits from it.
From time to time, some of us forget to read the instructions before using a product.
As a result, we either ignore a perfectly good product or throw it away.
When we do not use products as instructed, we are not only potentially causing damage to our hair, but we are wasting money too.
4. Enter Giveaways
If you’re not in it, you can’t win it. Don’t worry; this is not a lottery where you have to spend money to win something.
Entering a giveaway is free of cost and gives you the chance to win amazing prizes.
If you love free stuff, and I’m sure you do, never pass up a chance to enter giveaways.
Entering giveaways is one of the best ways to save money on hair products.
You can win things like:
- hair products
- Styling tools
- gift cards
- Hair accessories
Even if you think you won’t win, still enter anyway. And be on the lookout for giveaways from brands, bloggers and youtubers.
5. Find Sponsors
When you’re a content creator, you go through a lot of hair products to provide valuable information to your readers and viewers.
Reviewing products for the sake of helping others to find the best cleansers, deep conditioners, stylers and other hair products can be tough on your pocket.
Particularly, if you’re new to creating content, huge chunks of your money will go towards buying hair products to do reviews.
But, you don’t have to spend all that money every time a new product line comes out.
Once you’re passionate about a brand’s products and you love what they stand for as a company, don’t be afraid to contact them.
Let them know what experience you’ve had with their products, what services you’re willing to offer them and explain to them how working with you will be of benefit to them.
You see, a lot of brands will work with content creators because they’ll get more exposure, and consumers are likely to trust what a fellow consumer has to say about a product instead of trusting the words of the brand.
Consumers want to see the product in action before making a purchase, which is understandable because I wouldn’t want to buy something if I don’t know how it works.
Now, you may be afraid at first to pitch to brands, but it’s worth it because sponsorship deals can open up a lot of other opportunities for you.
Just go for it and remember to always be honest with yourself and your audience when you’re reviewing products, no matter the brand you’re working with.
6. Keep a Simple Hair Routine
Believe it or not, you don’t need an enormous product stash to grow long, healthy natural hair.
I know it’s fun trying new products, but try not to overdo it.
You absolutely do not need six different shampoos, ten conditioners or six product lines all at once to take care of your hair.
Only get what you need. If you are interested in trying new products, make an effort to get only a few you know you’ll be able to use before the expiration date.
7. Use Less Product
Some of us can be so heavy-handed when using products, but we have to remember less is more.
Using a large amount of product does not guarantee better hairstyling results and long-lasting moisture. It will only lead to product buildup and you’ going through a lot of products in a short time.
Think about it, the more product you use on your hair, the more product you’ll need.
So, use a reasonable amount whether you’re cleansing, styling, deep conditioning or moisturizing your hair and your products will last longer.
8. Buy in Bulk
When it comes down to getting hair products, doing so in bulk is one sure way to guarantee more savings.
You should buy products that work well for your hair in bulk whether that means you’re going to buy two or more of the same product. As long as you can afford to do this, do it.
The main reason you need to do this is that you don’t want to go to the store today and pick up one hair product and then within the next one or two weeks, you go back to pick up the same product.
Buying in bulk simply helps you save money because you get products at a cheaper cost.
Remember, if your local beauty supply store is not within walking distance, you’ll have to spend money on transportation or gas every time you run out of that product.
And if you are shopping online, just check up the total for shipping each time you purchase a product. You’d be surprised to know how much money you’re spending.
9. Ask for Samples
A lot of brands are more than happy to provide samples of their new products to potential customers.
You’ll definitely want to get a sample of a product before getting the full-size version because you have no idea what it will do to your hair.
And, you don’t want to end up wasting your money on products that can cause irritation and other hair issues.
Always ask for a sample, even if you believe there is none for a specific product.
However, if there are no samples, just get the smallest bottle or container you can find.
10. Check Product Reviews
Product reviews are the best pieces of information you can use to determine whether a product is best for your hair.
I always aim to check reviews before getting products because I don’t want to throw away my hard-earned money.
what helps me to decide what product is best for my hair are:
- Product uses
- Pros and cons
- Product ratings
- Supposed benefits or product claims
- Consistency or texture of the product
- Hair textures the product is suitable for
You can find helpful reviews on this blog, brand websites, Amazon, Influenster, Sally Beauty, YouTube, Walmart and other websites where you can purchase hair products.
11. Use Money-Saving Apps
When you want to avoid spending a fortune on hair products, use money-saving apps.
Some of the best money saving apps you can use to take a little pressure off your pockets are Honey, Ibotta, Shoptagr, Rakuten and RetailMeNot.
That being said, these aren’t the only apps you can use to save some money. Some stores provide you with apps that allow you to get exclusive offers and better deals on products.
Other apps like Sally Beauty, Target, Ulta, Walmart are apps that you also need to download if you’re serious about reducing your spending.
Saving money with apps is simple, and there’s no reason you shouldn’t take advantage of them.
12. Shop on Holidays and Deal Days
Deal days are the best. Wait for deal days like Black Friday, Cyber Monday, 4th of July, Labour Day, and Black History month to get the best deals on hair products.
I know it will be hard to wait for those days to buy your products, but try to control the urge to do so.
Create a product wishlist, put some money aside, then stock up on your favorites as soon as deal days arrive. Use coupon codes, affiliate links and apps to make the most of your money.
13. Use Subscription Boxes
Subscription boxes are so popular among the natural hair community. You can get over four full-sized products or an entire product line for half the price of the original cost.
How awesome is that?
Quench the product junkie in you for less money and try these subscription boxes:
- Curls and Confidence
- Curly Girly
- Nappy Love Box
14. Shop Around
The best price is never always the first price you see because prices vary from store to store.
On days when you’re shopping for household items, you can browse the hair aisle in stores or check for them online to get an idea of the different prices.
Doing this will help you find stores that offer your favorite products at the lowest price.
15. Find Multipurpose Hair Products
I love nothing more than having a product that has a variety of benefits. A product that detangles, moisturizes, adds shine and creates definition is a winner in my book.
It’s quite simple to save money when we buy hair products that offer multiple benefits or uses.
I don’t enjoy using a lot of different products when styling my hair or doing a simple protective style, and I’m sure you don’t either.
That is why you must buy multipurpose products so you can achieve beautiful styles using fewer products and, above all, limit your spending.
16. Make Your Own Products
Make your own deep conditioners, hot oil hair treatments, hair detanglers, protein treatments, scalp treatments and hair butters.
Since you already know what your hair needs and you know the ingredients that work for you, you have an excellent start for creating your own products.
But why create your own hair products? I can give you three reasons:
- You know the ingredients you’re putting in each product you make and that means no harsh chemicals, preservatives or fragrance
- You get to escape high-priced products
- You get to use products that work
Remember, while making your own products is a perfect way to save, you need to do your research when you are creating your own recipes or using those you find on the internet.
17. Use Products Until They Are Finished
I know it’s obvious that you need to use the entire product in a container to avoid wasting it.
But, how often do you really do that?
If buying new products and using them halfway happens often, you will end up with a massive product stash you’ll eventually have to get rid of if products go bad.
I know that sometimes you’ll buy products that don’t suit your hair type, and it’s okay to get rid of them.
But, as long as you have products you can depend on to moisturize, style, strengthen and protect your hair, use them before they expire.
18. Attend Natural Hair Shows
Excitement, discounts, freebies and fun! Natural hair shows are one of the best hair events you can attend to get better discounts on products.
You can even get natural and organic products for as low as $5.
And, if you’re not great with your natural hair or know how best to use products, get ready to learn from hair professionals who’ll be present at the events.
Get hair tips and also tips on how to apply products in a way that will allow you to get the most benefits.
Just make sure you attend events early because products run out fast.
19. Avoid Expensive Hair Products
If you think buying the most expensive product means you’re getting the best, think again.
Both cheap and expensive products contain harmful ingredients.
Some products that are more on the expensive side contain natural and organic ingredients and are worth the purchase.
You need to know you’re getting the best ingredients and the right amount of product for the price.
If you know deep down inside that the expensive product has ingredients your hair cannot tolerate, forget about it.
Don’t go after a product because it’s popular. It will not do your hair any good if it doesn’t contain ingredients your hair loves.
It’s good to buy organic and natural hair products that will nourish our hair, but we must be able to determine what products are organic and natural and what products are not.
20. Read the Ingredients List
The key to knowing if a product will work for your hair is by reading the ingredients list.
The ingredients list is one thing you should never overlook when buying a product.
While you’re admiring the packaging of the product, just take a few minutes to look at the list to see what ingredients are harmful and those that won’t work for your hair.
Some ingredients to look out for when purchasing products:
- Mineral oil
- Synthetic color
21. Create a Hair Journal
Get a journal and write a list of ingredients you’re comfortable using on your hair type and those that negatively affect it.
Consider writing alternative names for some ingredients since they have more than one name.
You don’t want to buy a product containing ingredients you’re allergic to because you didn’t see the name you’re familiar with on the label.
Unfortunately, sometimes you won’t notice you made a mistake until after you’ve used the product.
22. Return Products
Raise your hand if you bought a product on a whim and had to return it because it was not as effective as you thought it would be?
It happens to the best of us. Luckily, if you make this kind of mistake, you could easily return the item, but this depends on the store’s policy.
Some stores allow you to return a product without a receipt, while others require you to show proof of purchase.
Also, some stores will gladly accept a return even if you just started using the product while others won’t.
Get familiar with your store’s policies before buying new products.
23. Support Local Brands
I love purchasing international products, but I also love supporting my local brands.
When you support local brands, you are helping your people and country.
With that said, you are getting a lot of benefits just for shopping locally like:
- No shipping costs
- Exposure to more organic or natural products
- You get to shop in your local currency
- Easier access to natural hair show events
To top it off, if you’re a content creator who supports local brands, I’m sure most of them will want to help you too by offering sponsorships, freebies, or even recruit you to be a brand ambassador.
Buying local products is an essential thing you can do to put some extra cash back into your pocket.
24. Sell Products You Haven’t Used
If you feel you’re on the borderline of becoming obsessed over hair products, then you know it’s time to get rid of some of them, especially products you haven’t opened.
It’s easy to change your mind about something you were once interested in but, if you’re worried about the return policy for some products, it’s best to sell them.
Sell unopened products to your friends, neighbors, salons or anyone who cares to buy them.
25. Find Alternatives
Find alternative hair products capable of working as good or even better than the original or high-end product.
Sometimes we come across fantastic products, but we cannot continue buying them because they’re expensive.
Despite that, you don’t need to be sad since there are other products you can use. You may notice some alternative hair products:
- Cost less
- Works better
- Are easier to find
- Have better ingredients
- Are Cruelty-free
So, as long as you can find alternative products for the high-end products you like, give them a try.
26. Use Products for a Specific Period
It’s true that in some instances you can instantly tell whether a product is just for you.
But, on other occasions, you can’t know for sure unless you’ve used the product a couple of times. This could be the case with products like protein treatments, scalp treatments and hair growth oils.
Here are some reasons you may believe products are ineffective:
- You’re not following instructions or applying products correctly
- You’re mixing the product with other products
- You use too little or too much
- You’re not using the right products for specific hair problems (damaged hair, scalp conditions).
If you stay committed to using a product for a specific time, you will be better able to tell whether the product is effective.
There you go, I’ve just given you 26 ways you can save an insane amount of money on natural hair products.
Having natural hair is pricey, but it doesn’t have to be when you use simple tips like buying in bulk, keeping a simple hair routine, making your own hair products and so on.
